I'm running Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate, update 4.  I am getting a build error that shows no messages in the error list viewer.  The build error goes away after restarting Visual Studio.  I'm trying to determine the root cause of the issue, but I don't have an understanding of what Visual Studio is doing to piece together what's happening.  I have two questions about getting a deeper understanding of Visual Studio.  Is there some documentation that I can read that will describe the Visual Studio application lifecycle (what happens at startup, runtime, and shutdown)?  And is there any documentation about other logging I can enable?  Thank you.

Hi There,

I have an embedded workspace (.vcw) and project files(.vcp) I’ve inherited from an old project and would like to convert them into visual studio 2010 solution files. Does anyone know how this can be done and if there’s any official Microsoft docs/webpage about this? I’ve seen a few thing on the web and have already tried 2008 express with no luck. I thought I ask here before going on another wild goose chase.

I keep getting an error in the conversion wizard:

2010 was: Unable to convert project. Please make sure this is a valid Visual C++ 6.0 or later project.

2008 Express was: Unable to convert project. Please make sure this is a valid Visual C++ 4.0 or later project.

In explorer there are listed as type : eVC 3/4 Project/Workspace files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I wanted to upgrade a BIDS Visual Studio 2008 reporting services solution to VS 2013.
Is this possible? I've tried the VS 2013 automatic conversion but it fails.

Visual Studio 2012 has myseriously stopped working for me since yesterday afternoon. Whenever I try to start it, I now see a message box stating:

"Driver Common Package

Error loading the driver common package:
No exports were found that match the constraint:

Some hints as to what a user should actually do as a result of this problem would be greatly appreciated given that the error is, at least to me, 100% opaque and equally as unhelpful.

Starting the IDE again with the -log option, I see the following errors in ActivityLog.xml:

This sounds like some kind of corruption to me and in other circumstances I would likely just reinstall the tool and try again. Unfortunately, I'm traveling this week and have no access to an installation disk. Can anyone offer any suggestions to get me back up and running in the meantime without the need for a DVD or a fat internet pipe? In case it may be relevant, I installed WDK 8.0 yesterday afternoon. Visual Studio worked fine after this as far as I can remember but it hasn't worked since the first reboot after the WDK installation.

Hi,

I am trying to install the latest VS2015 ultimate CTP (CTP 5) from the ISO image. The flash screen appears and then disappears after a second and nothing further happens. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit which is fully updated.

Hi, I've setup subversion and AnkhSVN in our Visual Studio 2012 environment and so far I'm happy with it. I've recently looked at adding our SSRS reports to it and the functionality seems to be working in terms it will tell a user with a popup that a file is locked out to somebody else if they try to commit. However there is no icon on the .rdl file, it would be great if there was a persons face and lock icon if somebody had it checked out.

There's only two of us using this, its all updated to the latest version. Am I using it correctly and is this request more of a wish list? Thanks!

Hi,

i am becoming a bit desperate about a problem i am facing with Visual Studio 2013 Express w/ Update 4.

I wanted to start porting my Windows Phone 8 apps/games to Windows Phone 8.1/Windows 8.1 so i installed Visual Studio 2013, however, and whatever i do, the designer is not loading and show only this error message:

[4536] Designer process terminated unexpectedly!

I tried updating everything, including my display driver, but nothing. I tried starting a completly new project to see if something different happen, but no!

My development computer is a Surface Pro 1, used as a desktop replacement, plugged into a Toshiba Dynadock u3.0 with Dual screen using a DisplayLink.

I seem to having problems opening a file that was save with visual studio 2012 express for web with visual studio 2013 express for desktop. When I attempt to open the file, it says there is a problem with the CSPROJ file... I have searched for a solution in these forums but came up with nothing..

I am on a team working on a long-term MVC 4 project. The solution was created in a previous version of VS. In VS 2013, when you right click the controllers folder and choose "add controller..." the only options are for WebAPI 2. 

We discovered with our source code management tools that VS 2013 is dropping the project type GUID for MVC 4 (E3E379DF-F4C6-4180-9B81-6769533ABE47) from the .csproj file. This happens as soon as the project is loaded in VS 2013.  You can add the GUID in notepad, but as soon as you open it in VS 2013, it is deleted.

VS 2012 does not delete the GUID.

How can we solve this problem?  It sure would be nice to have the scaffolding for MVC 4 in VS 2013.

Thanks to partials now to see what a class is made up one has to search for the occurrences of that class in the solution.

Also the extensions add to the class in places that one has to go and search for the class again? Can extension methods be inherited? if yes would class viewer or class diagram display the extension methods that were inherited as well?

I'm using Visual Studio Ultimate w/ Update 4. I've tried reinstalling VS entirely, reinstalling all of the components including the WP8 kit and I've tried repairing VS. Searching gets me nowhere because VS isn't specific in a way that I've found helpful with this exception. Designer used to work perfectly fine but the last time I used VS was a good 6 months+ ago. The only thing I can think of that I've done differently is use NuGet to get the MS Band tools(I didn't try and use designer before doing that so I don't know if it worked prior). I'm kind of at the point of a full OS reinstall but I'm really really hoping I can get some help actually fixing this as I'm running Windows via Bootcamp so it's a huge deal to have to reinstall windows.

Here is the message I get whenever I try to open designer in VS:

Hi,

Is there any way to generate the functional code coverage of C# windows/console application in Visual Studio's any version(2010/2012)?

Functional code coverage means by executing the functional test cases not the unit test cases(NUnit/MSTest etc.).

the HTML5 picture element is not supported for my VS 2013 project nor does it have intellisense for it. How can I get that installed or updated?

When I do a schema compare in database project using source control as the left side and the database on the right side it is not detecting missing tables on the right side.  What is wrong with this product or what am I doing wrong here?  Also, I have timeout issues.  When I GOOGLE it, I see help for visual studio 2010 asking me to modify a REGISTRY KEY; but, the same registry key doesn't exist for visual studio 2013.

Original question

I have my onedrive location set to a seperate HDD and my documents, pictures , music and what have you locations are set as onedrive

the save documents to onedrive by default is turned on in pc settings

i have my visual studio set to use D: onedrive/documents/visual studio 2010

and it all works well apart from everytime i start it up it creates a new document folder in my personal folder on C drive where it used to be but all it contains is backup files and start page even though these are both in the ondrive documents folder

No other program does this. not even vs 2013

any ideas how to fix this?

Hello,

can you tell me, how can I determine the current update of Visual Studio 2013 from registry? The thing is that I have MyApp which requires Visual Studio 2013 Express with Update 4 or above. I know how to detect the version of VS, but I have no clue how to get Update of VS.

I get version from:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DevDic\vs\Servicing\<version>

I have found the registry key UpdateVersion, but its content does not say anything to me. I wish to have exact number of update or at least to know hot to determine update from UpdateVersion.

We inherit a project develop using Platform Builder with WINCE7 and Visual Studio 2008. The project has a BSP, 5 sub-projects and a DLL. The problem is that when we add a function to the DLL Data Manager and try to call the new function from any of the subproject using an Data Manager object that is currently used in the subproject to call other functions on the Data Manager DLL, we get the following error:"Error 107 Configuration_Setting_Mapper.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "public: void __cdecl Data_Manager::Configuration_Manager::Set_Default_TEST(void)" (?Set_Default_TEST@Configuration_Manager@Data_Manager@@QAAXXZ) referenced in function "public: bool __cdecl Configuration_Setting_Mapper::Set_UserName_Default(void)" (?Set_UserName_Default@Configuration_Setting_Mapper@@QAA_NXZ)

Same error is received when we try to change the return type of any of the functions in the Data Manager DLL. Do we have to set a link between the Data Manager and the subproject? What could be missing?
