Visual Studio 2010 is hanging at random times during builds and opening files and just generally looking at things in a WPF project.

Hi I'm having a very bad day with VS2010 UltimateSP1

I'm running

Windows 7 ultimate SP1 64bit

on  HP p6793uk machine with an AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 Processor 2.60Ghz

with 14.0 GB RAM (13.7 GB usable)

I've been trying to work in an extensive (20+ controls/screens) WPF project we have and every time I try and do something the VS UI is hanging.

If I build it hangs, if I try and disable Addins (in a vain effort to stop the build hangs) it hangs, if I open a file it hangs. The biggest issue is that it doesn't appear to hang as everything seems to be working, however you can't click on anything and after a time the UI goes to the Windows not responding white. After this I have no option but to open task manager and kill the process to try and get working again. This is also a very random problem as what caused a hang one time will not necessarily cause it the next time but it might.

This is starting to get annoying. I've tried updating my graphics drivers (something I discovered on Google) I've disabled everything on the system that I do not need and I’ve switched off all my extensions and VS addins and nothing seems to solve the problem.

The other issue is that this doesn't seem to be registering as an issue as runnig with logging (i.e. devenv.exe /log <path on local machine> ) doesn't produce any log files and nothing is recorded.

Can anyone help me before I go insane.

James Rogers
