Here is the scenario. We have virtual machines (4 Cores+16GB). We load a visual studo solution with aproximately 50 projects and rebuild. This is a WCF middle tier solution that is consumed by web-sites. When Visual Studio is first started it uses about 1 GB of memory. Then, when svcutil.exe is being called to interrogate the web services, it jumps to 3GB in about 2 minutes. When the compilation is complete 13GB has been used with NO OTHER APPs running. Task Manager shows DevEnv.exe at 500MB. But the CLR heap is massive.
When you exit Visual Studio the memory is not releasedand 13GB remains in use. Of course, this slows everything down to a crawl.
Is there a fix or workaround for this? This has to be Visual Studio IMHO. I have Re-Sharper as well but another co-worker of mine doest NOT have Re-sharper and he is getting the exact same condition that I am.
Is there a tool available to re-claim the memory manually instead of rebooting?
Is there a way to tell VS NOT to use all the memory and reduce its footprint?
I was hoping that by getting VMs with lots of memory and cores I'd have a zippy, robust environment. Instead, VS has decided it owns it all starving all other processes from CPU and memory; not to mention itself! This kinda sucks and so far leave me with a negative impression of Visual Studio.
