VS2013 Object relational Designer not working. Doesn't let me drop tables onto surface of DBML designer.

After installing a Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate on new Windows box, I created a connection in solution explorer to a database on a remote server. I can see the tables and view content via view options. I created a simple web form app and added a LINQ to SQL Classes object which created the appropriate .dbml objects.   I select the dbml object and the object relational designer window editor appears as expected.   I then try to drag one of the tables from the solution explorer window and nothing happens.  ie. I can't drag any table to the dbml visual editor window.   I've applied all the latest VS2013 updates/  rebooted/ searched the web and tried various hacks that all resulted in the same above scenario.  Help!!!!   This is a core functionality requirement for most of our back-end data access and we are at a standstill until this issue can be resolved.  Thanks
