Out of Memory errors

I've got Visual Studio 2013 update 3 installed and I keep getting really strange behaviour.

I was getting this error before update 3 and then with update 4 RC it seemed better for a bit, but then it got really bad, i.e. it was happening more and more often.

Installing update 4 as I type, but I'm not holding my breath

If I'm doing a refactoring section where I'm running loads of tests repeatedly, then after a while, I start to encounter erratic behaviour:

  • Builds fail for no reason but no errors are displayed.
  • Trying to debug a console app leads to errors too.
  • Yesterday I had an error on mscorlib.dll

If i close VS and try to restart, then I get an out of memory window and VS refuses to start.

I've tried to start VS with /log (e.g. devenv /log c:\temp\vs.xml) but nothing shows up in the logs.

I've noticed, when this happens, there are loads, 10+, msbuild.exe processes.

Sometimes, killing them seems to sort the issue out, but other times i need to reboot.

Laptop has 32 GB of Ram and it's running Win 7 SP1 x64 and RAM usage never exceeds 10-12GB

Any ideas?

TIA

Prevent Upgrading C++/CLI to .net framework 4.5

I've also noticed there's anothe unresolved question which looks like a duplicate of this one. Here it is. And here's yet Another one, again unresolved but similar issue that can be found here)

We have a solution that contains both C#, "pure" native C++ projects and C++/CLI project.

We decided to upgrade our dev env to Visual Studio 2013, but target the managed/mixed projects to .net 4.0.

This imposed some complexity with the C++/CLI projects since they do not have the option to set the target framework through Visual Studio's UI, but we have overcame this by manually adding <TargetFrameworkVersion>v4.0</TargetFrameworkVersion> to the respective vcxproj.

But now we face a harder problem.

Each time the sources are cleanly pulled from our Source Control server, when opening the Solution for the first time is asks to upgrade to C++/CLI projects to .net 4.5 framework. (see screenshot bellow).

What's even stranger is that the C# projects that are set to target .net 4.0 do not present such a behavior.

After selecting cancel, or unchecking the checkboxes the behavior will not repeat. Apparently those setting are stored in the <solution>.suo file. because after deleting it - it asks for the upgrade once again.

Now, storing the suo file in the version control system seems like a very bad idea - this file contains per user generated settings.

So the question is: is there a way to prevent visual studio from suggesting to upgrade the C++/CLI projects to .net 4.5, at the vcxproj/sln level?

Many 10x,

Ariel

Visual Studio Express 2012 Desktop vs. Visual Studio Express 2012 Windows 8

Hello,

I use Visual Studio Express 2012 Desktop in class and i have a laptop at home running Windows 8. I downloaded Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows 8 and it can not read my files that I've done in class. I tried downloading Visual Studio Express 2012 Desktop for my laptop it works but once i exit out of the program i get an error when i try to reopen it saying Repair or Uninstall. The repair does not work and i have to uninstall and reinstall every time. Is there any solutions why the windows 8 version does not read ones i do on a desktop version or how to fix the problem i am seeing with the desktop version on my laptop? For class I am required to use Visual Studio Express 2012. Please any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Goto definition when having file reference

$

We have a software package consisting of about 400 VB.NET projects. Because a solution with this number of projects would be very slow, we use file references. The problem is, that when doing "Goto definition" either by right-clicking or with F12 on a class that is not in the current project, the Object Browser opens and not the source code of the desired class. However, when debugging, the correct source code file opens, even if the currently debugged class is not in the current project. Is there a way to have "Goto definition" always open the source file of the desired class? If not, could an add-in be built to provide this functionality?

VS2013 crashing randomly

$

Hi!

I'm working on an ASP.NET MVC Project in VS2013 Premium Update 4 and it keeps crashing randomly. Sometimes it just shuts down, but most of the time it restarts. It's a fresh install and other people at my Company are experiencing the same issues.

EDIT: I've tried to open a support ticket but I can't see my product key since I activated VS2013 through my MSDN subscription. Is there another way to contact customer support, besides calling?

Here's some info I could gather from the Event Viewer (sorry, but it's in german. I'll try to translate it if needed):

Issue with VS 2013 U4 (or VS 2015 Preview) Web Forms application template and Session Variables

$
0
0

I created a new Web Forms project using the template in Visual Studio 2013 Update 4, then I added a session variable to the Page_Load of the site.master, and nowonly one user at a time can log into my application.

I am detailing the steps to reproduce below, note this is the simplest set of steps to reproduce (in actuality, I had 10's of pages in my web application, and the application deployed to test before a user highlighted this issue to me, and then it took me multiple hours to identify the session variable is causing the problem).

I have reproduced this issue in Visual Studio 2015 Preview, but this issue doesnot exist in VS 2012.

Steps to reproduce
1.  In Visual Studio 2013, create a new project, use the ASP.NET Web Application template, choose Web Forms template, Authentication = Individual User Accounts, and do not host in the cloud.
2.  Open the Site.Master.cs and add the following code in the Page_Load

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
            if (Page.User.Identity.IsAuthenticated)
            {
                if (Session["ASessionVariable"] == null)
                {
                    Session["ASessionVariable"] = true;
                }
            }
        }

3.  Now Launch the application using IE browser from VS and register a new user account (this will create the database in the background, either local mdf file or database if you have updated the web.config to point at SQL Server).
Result: User is now logged into the application – great.
4.  Access the application from a different browser - Chrome (I want a separate session to step 3).  Register another user.
Result: The user is not logged into the application.  The user record gets created in the database and you are redirected to the default page (or wherever).

Try login login again as the second registered user, same result as when registering, it no login error, redirected to default page, but user is not authenticated

Could you guys do either of the following:
a.Tell me if I am doing something crazy with the Page_Load code.
b.Reproduce the problem from the steps and confirm the issue.

Please note I have reproduced this on different laptops as I have VS 2013 Update 4 on one and VS 2015 Preview on another and am accessing different SQL servers, just to ensure that there is not some environment issue in play.

Thanks in advance, Alan.

VS 2010 - Entity sqlite provider missing

I have an application developed in .NET 4.0 using sqlite. The version of sqlite I used was to 1.0.88. However, on a new computer, I did the installation of the latest version of System.Data.SQLite (1.0.94) in http://system.data.sqlite.org/index.html/doc/trunk/www/downloads.wiki downloading the version: sqlite-netFx40-setup-bundle-x86-2010-1.0.94.0.exe that fits what I need. However, although unable to connect on the database, make selec, insert and etc. via entity, I can not create a new entity model using sqlite. I can even create a connection in server explorer with sqlite provider, but when trying do the same when the model is Enity the sqlite provider is not listed

There is certain registry key named "Class" under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\DISPLAY\Default_Monitor\...\"  with value as "Monitor" is missing.

I need to get desktop monitor information via EDID on check for Class = "Monitor".

What is the reason for this missing registry key?

Hi, I've just created a new vs 2015 preview vm in azure. I have added the VS Sdk & Azure Sdk otherwise a clean install except anything added by the web api project template.

Created a web api project and received the following exception when clicking on a json file. From the event log it appears to be related to the generated test helper project

I can reproduce the error, happens first time I try to autopreview a json file after firing up visual studio. Below are the details

Community Edition BUG???

Hello,

I would report this as a bug (a suggested on asp.net, but i am not allowed to :-( ) so hopefully somebody outhere can help me.

Lately i start using the community edition of VS instead of VS2010. Everythings seems to work fine but has one anoying bug.

I have created a mvc5 project. Added 8 controllers and view, etc. everything OK. Since now i cannot add a new controller anymore. In the Add Controller dialog box the pulldown Model Class and Data context class are empty and there is no way to get it filled.

Also in the project the main Namespace   SeaFuy.Controllers, SeaFuy.Library is underlined red and it says. The type or namespace Seafuy cannot be found. If i recompile the project  all redlines disappear. The application runs fine without errors. Then after a few minutes the red lines appear again :-(

What i have done sofar:

- restarted VS

- compile project as well as solution

-cleaned up tmp folders

- re installed VS

- removed the project and recreated it again from SourceControl.

Anybody any idea?? I run it on windows 8.1 64 bits system.

Best regards, Marcel

How Can I Simulate Double-Clicking A File To Open It In The Default App Without Installing Default App?

I have an app written with Visual Studio 2013. The app has code for opening a file using the standard OpenFileDialog and also has code (AutoOpenFile()) for opening a file when a user double-clicks on a file that is handled by the app. I have not yet created an installer for the app, so I won't be able to test it's AutoOpenFile() code...unless there is a way to simulate the process of auto-opening the double-clicked file without actually installing the app on my PC. Anyone?
