New Web Project fails to compile - error MSB6003: The specified task executable "csc.exe" could not be run

Hi All,

I am creating my first ASP.NET Web Application and I think I must be making a rookie mistake. I've been through a couple of tutorials and everything seemed to work ok with new solutions, but when I add a new ASP.NET Web application to my existing solution I get the following error:

"Microsoft.Net.Compilers.1.0.0\tools\Microsoft.CSharp.Core.targets(67,5): error MSB6003: The specified task executable "csc.exe" could not be run. Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.CodeAnalysis.CSharp, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified."

Considering that all I've done is create a new project and hit compile, I'm a little surprised that this doesn't work.

I am using MSVS 2015 Professional and have added 2 new ASP.NET Web Applications (using .NET 4.5). Neither compiles out of the box and I can't find any clues online anywhere that seem relevant.

Has anyone else encountered this or understand what I'm missing?

I have a visual studio 2010 web form application that I support. Right now I am using windows 7 computer and want to upgrade to a windows 10 computer.

Due to that fact can you tell me if the visual studio 2010 vb.net 2010 web form application will have problems running on a windows 10 computer? if so, what should I need to be aware of or what out for and what can I do to solve the potential problems?

Unable to Service Request when clicking Error Code help link

$

Using Visual Studio 2015 and with Chrome as my default browser, sometimes I click the error code link in my Error List (Show Error Code Help) after compiling C++ code with an error in it.

The first time I click the link I get taken to a page that says "Unable to Service Request".  Like this one:  https://msdn.microsoft.com/Areas/Epx/Content/500.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/query/dev14.query

The second time I click the link, it seems to go to the right spot.  For example, C3646 ultimately takes me to https://msdn.microsoft.com/query/dev14.query?appId=Dev14IDEF1&l=EN-US&k=k(C3646)&rd=true

I haven't figured out what "resets" it back to producing the Unable to Service Request error, but it happens to me a lot. (Maybe when I close my browser?  Maybe when I close Visual Studio?  Haven't nailed it down yet.)

Anyone know why this happens?  Does it happen to anyone else?

What happened to the header?

Hi. I noticed Visual Studio 2015 RC does not install the debug heap support header for Microsoft (xdebug).

For VS2013 and presumably older versions, it is located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 12.0\VC\include .
Is there a replacement for this header, where I can obtain the same interfaces or functionalities?
There is an old application I maintain and disregarding that #include is not currently an option.

Thanks!

Visual Studio Community 2015 Issue

I installed Visual Studio community 2015, about a month ago. Now I moved to California from North Carolina. When I open visual studio today for first time in California, it says following error:

"Your license has gone stale and must be updated. Please make sure the internet is connected, then check for an updated license to continue using this product."

When I click "Check for an updated license", it says the following:

"We could not download a license. Please check your network connection or proxy settings".

QUESTIONS

1. I downloaded Visual Studio community 2015 using "Visual Studio Dev Essentials". Is it only for 30 day trail. Is there a way to use this without making a payment, for my individual learning purpose?

2. If there is no way to continue it's use without payment, what is the next best option without payment? Is there any express edition available (that does not have trial period)?

Go(lang) support in Visual Studio (Professional || Enterprise) 2017

As I have been slowly finding myself migrating from Linux/Mac OS -> Windows 10 for my development/professional work. The tools that share my screen have also been changing. Most recently I switched to Visual Studio Code (https://code.visualstudio.com/), which has excellent go language support thru (https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=lukehoban.Go).

This got me thinking that I should check out its big brother; Visual Studio. While it is pretty amazing, the lack of first class or even a high quality extension for go leaves me going back to VSC. Any chance this situation will change?

Trouble Installing Visual Studio Community 2017 RC

I've tried several times to install Visual Studio Community 2017 RC several times without success. I also uninstalled and re-installed, as well as the "repair" option a few times. After uninstalling, I used a tool called TotalUninstaller to completely remove any remnants of Visual Studio before trying to install it again. Even after doing that, the installer quits with message "Setup Operation Failed".

Here is the log file:

Keyboard Stops Working

Under VS 2015, periodically my Logitech wireless keyboard stops working: you can press keys, but nothing shows up on screen. Until after a period of time there's a burst of text displayed (but not all the keys which have been pressed).

This is under Win 10/64 bit, all updates for both Windows and VS 2015 installed.

Needless to say, this is very annoying.

Has anyone else run into this? And figured out how to solve it?

How to launch another project debugger when unit testing runs

$

0

Hello,

I have a scenario in which running a set of unit tests requires that a second project debugger be running.

Specifically that second project is built for ASP.NET MVC, but we're not ready to jump to Core refactoring, that is until that whole mess has stabilized and dust has settled somewhat.

I have a similar scenario designed for use with ASP.NET Web API, which is something else entirely, in that I can leverage OWIN to self-host. That would be ideal, but apparently this isn't the case for MVC (?), or at least until Core refactoring is ready, etc, etc, etc.

Also, I am using xunit. Seems like to me the choice of test framework is not as important, or that there should be a set of extensions or NuGet packages or something along these lines for Visual Studio integration, i.e. launch specified project debugger.

To be clear, I'm not talking about running two projects alongside one another. I am also not talking about "testing" a Controller, apart from MVC scaffolding. Ostensibly, I'm talking about launching second debugger when a unit test runs.

The reason for this is that the integration I am working on extends ActionFilterAttribute, which I want to get a sense of under integrated, i.e. semi-fully-operational, circumstances.

Hope this makes sense. At this point I haven't found what I'm looking for, or I haven't asked the right set of questions yet. Looking forward to receiving helpful feedback.

Thanks and kind regards,

Michael Powell

2015.3 go to definition broken

All of a sudden my two dev boxes no longer work, I rolled a new virtual machine with Windows Server 2016 and installed VS 2015.3 without any additional software and the behavior remains, an error message is displayed. Most posts suggest an old issue with tabs/spaces which is not relevant in this case.

Anyone else seeing this now?

How do I Exclude auto generated (DataSet) classes from code analysis

$

The Code Analysis tool appears to be including auto generated code that was generated by a DataSet file (XSD). Namely it comes back with a CA2240 Implement ISerializable correctly message.  The top of the auto generated file contains this header.

//------------------------------------------------------------------------------

// <auto-generated>

//     This code was generated by a tool.

//     Runtime Version:4.0.30319.18052

//

//     Changes to this file may cause incorrect behavior and will be lost if

//     the code is regenerated.

// </auto-generated>

//------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does anyone know how to resolve this?

Steps to reproduce.

  1. Create a new project (Class Library)
  2. Add a new DataSet.
  3. Add a new table adapter to the dataset; I added a text query for  AdventureWorks2012.Person.Person
  4. Set Code Analysis rule set in project properties to "Microsoft Managed Recommended Rules"
  5. Run Code Analysis.

Expected:

               No Issues found

Actual:

               2 instances of

CA2240 Implement ISerializable correctly
Add an implementation of GetObjectData to type 'DataSet1'.

Root element is missing

Hi everyone

Currently Visual Studio 2015 is installed on my computer with Xamarin. Everything works fine, except I am unable to create a new blank Universal Windows app. Every time I want to create such a project in my solution the error message "Root element is missing" pops up...

What could be the problem? FYI uninstalling and reinstalling VS2015 does not do anything.

I am trying to install Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2015 on a PC with a Windows 10 Pro operating system.  This is the first time that I have tried to install this software.  When I try to install I get the following notice:

Changes are not allowed while code is running

Started VS ultimate 2013:

1. Pointed to specific Application in Set As Start Project in Debug mode.

2. Located to code base and tried to update something.

3. Closed the running application

4. Display popup message "Changes are not allowed while code is running", not able to close that popup message as It is not allowing to close VS 2013 and also OK button not working.

So Visual Studio hanged and not able to close it manually (Not allowed to use Close button as popup windows enabled).

This is my second time to reproduce the same issue. Please help me to short out that problem. There is one way to start VS by forcefully need to close using Task Manager.

Code Analysis

I am a big believer and heavy user of static code analysis to ensure quality code without having to manually review everyone's work.

It looks like starting with ASP.NET Core Web Application projects in Visual Studio 2015 and now continuing into other project types in Visual Studio 2017 RC, there is no longer a static code analysis option.

Where I would once right-click on a project and select Properties and be able to select the Code Analysis page to set and configure my code analysis options, the Code Analysis page no longer exists for ASP.NET Core Web Application projects nor does it exist for what would appear to be additional project types in VS 2017 RC. I've tried a .NET Framework Class Library project and an ASP.NET Core Web Application and neither have any option for code analysis.

Is the Microsoft team no longer building in support for static code analysis in Visual Studio?  This would be very disappointing if true.

If code analysis is only supported on certain project types in VS 2017 RC, is there a reason why and is there a listing of the supported project types somewhere?

Install OpenCv and use it. Error when I launch an application.

Hi everybody !

I'm studying in highschool in France (be indulgent for my english). And I need for a project to measure depth. I can use single or twice webcam. But I need to detect a face and measure the distance between this cam and my object or my face.

I thought to use OpenCv for detect the face and I found on GitHub, a projet who seems to be similar to the mine. So I install OpenCV 2.4.13, with the free licence of Visual Studio 2015. I follow advice that I found on this video :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POpMQPM9YlY&t=919s

However, when I want to debug a programm who is using OpenCv Library. I get some error. The debugger can't find some dll or pdb files. In the console, I can read : impossible to load kernel32 and other files ...

I don't know if the problem come from here. After i get another problem when I debug :

Application can't lauch ( 0x000007b). Click on OK to close the application.

(i didn't write all of error message...)

What can I try to resolve my problem ?

Thanks in advance.

How do I 'Verify that an assembly reference is not missing.' in my app

My app is working, both when deployed from VS2012 onto my Windows Phone 8.1 and from Community 2015 onto my Windows Phone 10.   BUT, I am told by VS2015 that a type 'controls:Panorama' is missing.  Yet it works!  Why is this an error, flagged by underline in VS2015, but not in VS2012?   Obviously, I am a novice at this kind of thing, being entirely self taught by trial and error, but without guidance I may just cause some kind of damage to my app or my phone(s).
